Sustainable Party is a hip little pocket of the internet where you can buy compostable tableware and learn what it takes to throw a fantastically sustainable event. Follow us on Twitter, come party in Brooklyn, or drop us a line anytime.

Here’s to incorporating sustainability into everything we do – from the everyday to the part-ay!

Sustainable Party

betacup Challenge!

betacup Challenge!:
In North America we consume 58 billion of these bad boys [paper coffee cups] every year. This represents 60% of the worlds total cup waste. Shockingly these cups are not being recycled and most end up in landfill.

Our friends over at betacup need your help to find a solution that eliminates paper cup consumption while creating a more convenient alternative to existing reusable coffee mugs.

Students used our signs to create a dorm recycling station at...

Students used our signs to create a dorm recycling station at the Georgia Institute of Technology!
We are a group of young, creative, and conscious, “urban farmers” who needed a place to get away, get our hands dirty and free our minds from the daily grind. We were lucky enough to find it at Ananda Ashram, a beautiful 85 acre meditation and yoga center just an hour away from NYC. We have dedicated our time, our hands and our pockets to creating the Ashram’s first garden Ananda Harvest, and it’s like our own.

We love it so much that we’re inviting a few of our closest friends to join us in the movement and help us create the next phase of the farm. We invite you to support an effort that leaves a positive impact on our world and encourages you to get out of the city.

Join us while we talk about our progress thus far and show you how you can support our mission. .

As a thank you, we’ll have delicious food prepared by Ananda’s Kitchen, tableware by Sustainable Party, local wines and music and an awesome crowd of people who will be instant friends.

All the utensils, plates and cups the conference used (as well as the food) was biodegradable and compostable thanks to Sustainable Party. So instead of creating more garbage, Sustainable Party set up collection bins which were taken to a composting facility after The Feast was over to be turned back into rich dark earth ready for growing again.

Highlights include of our involvement at the Feast include:

* Smelling the corn-based cutlery with the catering staff and educating them about the natural products and how to compost at events! They were all so HELPFUL - we send a big thank you SO MUCH to the catering staff there & wonderful manager Francisco!

* Listening to the speakers and enjoying the absolutely inspiring conference, and meeting wonderful people including speaker and artist Kenna who posed with SP Founder Emily while drinking from his Sustainable Party cup!

* SP Prez Jessica posing with the LARGE amount of compost that the conference generated next to the relatively small amount of trash/recycling that was generated, and even getting Jeff, the catering waste manager, to be excited about it!

Thanks to Caitlin & the wonderful folks at Blip.tv for using...

Thanks to Caitlin & the wonderful folks at Blip.tv for using our VerTerra bowls for cereal at their breakfast bar.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. —
Ready for all the 4th of July festivities?

Celebrate our country’s past AND the planet’s future all at the same time! Celia Chen, an entertaining expert and Editor-in-Chief of notesonaparty.com shares her tips for throwing an eco-friendly Independence Day bash.

Go Organic
Food that is farm fresh and free of hormones, pesticides and chemicals not only tastes good but is good for you. Be patriotic by supporting your American farmer by buying your fruit, vegetables and dairy from a local market. For those of you that love to BBQ, make sure you serve certified organic meat and free range poultry that is humanely raised. And don’t forget to serve a vegetarian option! Grilled portobello mushrooms marinated with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar makes a hearty filler for a hamburger bun!

Improvise With Your Tableware
Be a creative hostess and find new ways to use what you already have instead of rushing out to buy new specialty dinnerware that you may never use again. Anything flat from a slab of marble to a wooden chopping block can be used to create a cheese platter. Small mismatched bowls can add some color to an all white coordinated dinner set. New York sustainable catering company Relish Caterers makes a crudité tray using a variety of left over glassware, including a martini glass, bud vase and a water glass to hold veggie slices. It’s a fresh way to present the typical platter and solves the problem of including different sized vegetables from carrot sticks to broccoli florets.

Turn Your Watermelon Into Punchbowl
Here’s a trick that your guests will love. Turn a regular watermelon into a festive punch bowl. First cut the bottom to make it lay flat on your table. Then cut off the top and use an ice cream scoop to hollow it out. Pour in your favorite punch, sliced summer fruit and mint, surround with small glasses and you have a 4th of July centerpiece that says “fun in the Summer sun!”

Stay Away From Disposables
Need a non-glass alternative for your BBQ or holiday picnic? Think twice about disposable plastic ware that is used once and sent to a landfill. Sustainable Party (http://www.sustainableparty.com), an online store that sells eco-friendly party supplies, features brands like VerTerra, who make compostable plates and trays out of pressed palm leaves. They are light and portable for easy transporting, as well as a chic addition to your table. Other items include cups and cutlery made out of corn or plant starch that biodegrade in 90 to 120 days.

Well, St. Patrick’s Day is upon us. Can you think..."

“
Green Your St. Patrick’s Day Partying

Well, St. Patrick’s Day is upon us. Can you think of a better time to throw a green party? Nope! You can’t. So here are some fun and easy ways to get started:

1. Drink local beer
It’s probably available down the street from you — and don’t tell me there isn’t local beer. Find something from your area with these handy maps from Beermapping.com, which will point you to breweries near you. Just deselect the other options like “beer bars,” and “homebrew stores.” I’ll probably fill up a reusable 64-ounce growler of some Kelso brew, or maybe something from Sixpoint Craft Ales — both breweries are about two miles from my apartment.

2. And don’t throw anything away
Come on — plastic cups, really? What are you, a freshman? Shell out for some pint glasses! Extra credit if your glasses used to be beer bottles. When I first moved to my new apartment, I asked party-goers to bring their own vessels. That didn’t work, so go ahead and use this as an excuse to outfit yourself with some new party-ready glasses.

3. Vegan eatin’: Vegan corned “beef” and cabbage
I’ve never tried this one, but I’ll say this: I’m increasingly impressed with imitation meat meals. Especially vegan junk food (like Foodswings in Brooklyn). But if you want to reduce the impact of your St. Patrick’s Day food — or if you want to cater to your friends who don’t eat meat, here’s a recipe for Vegan corned “beef” and cabbage.

4. Have a clothing swap party
Recession BONUS: Dress in green and bring clothes you don’t wear anymore to trade with friends. It’s the cheapest, greenest wardrobe option around! Here is the cheesiest possible video explaining the rules of clothing swap parties.

5. Try greener lighting
…which is to say none! That’s right — party by moonlight. Or candlelight. Prove that you can do better than Earth Hour while partying.

6. Hungover the day after? Work from home
If you can work from home, do it! It’ll cut down on carbon emissions and loud, awful phone ringers in your ears.
